Allison's Prosthesis

Meet Allison

Adopt Allison

Allison the Atlantic Green Sea TurtleWe are home to "Allison", the first sea turtle in the world to use a successful prosthesis! Allison survived a predator attack in 2005 with only one flipper remaining. For years, Allison could only swim in circles. In 2009, a STI intern designed a prosthetic device to help Allison swim. It was the first successful sea turtle prosthetic in the world! Since then, we have gone through several versions, each one improving on the last. Allison has been featured in People Magazine, Discovery Channel, and the Today Show.

Check out this video from 2009, as Allison tests out the second version of her prosthesis. Today, she uses version number 6.

In April 2014, Allison was filmed by PBS for a Nature webisode about prosthetics. Take a look to see how far she, and her prosthetic, have come since the previous video!
