We are home to "Allison", the first sea turtle in the world to use a successful prosthetic! Allison survived a predator attack in 2005 with one remaining flipper. For years, Allison could only swim in circles. In 2009, a STI intern designed a prosthetic device to help Allison swim! It was the first successful sea turtle prosthetic in the world. Since then, we have gone through several prosthetics, each one improving on the last. Allison has been featured in People Magazine, Discovery Channel, and the Today Show.
Check out this video from 2009, as Allison tests out the second version of her prosthetic. Today, she uses version number 5.
Recently, Allison was also filmed by PBS for a Nature webisode about prosthetics, published in April, 2014. Take a look to see how far she, and her prosthetic, have come since the previous video!
