On the road to success, but still miles to go!

We are getting excited as this project approaches. Soon we expect to break ground on the next phase of our $4 million expansion — the new educational center and parking lot. Currently, our Executive Director is in the process of finalizing the structural engineer requirements and architectural design, which is expected to be finished by February or March. Once that step is complete, a request for bids will go out. If all stays on track, the bid could be awarded in March and construction could begin as early as April. Although we have made...

Sea Turtles Connect All of Us

Sea Turtles Connect All of Us

New England Aquarium shared a great story on Oct. 31 about a sea turtle named “Harriet” rescued in 1999 and rehabilitated. Years later, in 2009, she was found in Texas nesting on North Padre Island, then later on South Padre Island. Her nests were then recovered and protected by the North Padre NPS Sea Turtle Science & Recovery Division and Sea Turtle, Inc., so they could hatch and make their own journey to the sea. Since sea turtles migrate along the continents and around the globe, these turtles need people helping them in many places...

Cold-stun around the nation

Cold-stun around the nation

In mid-November, South Padre Island had a cold front come through for about a week that affected many sea turtles in the Laguna Madre. The water temperature dropped rapidly, causing many to cold-stun — a form of hypothermia. About 70 sea turtles were brought to the facility over the course of three to four days for care. Seventy cold-stunned sea turtles is not unusual during a cold front, although it was a little early in the winter season for such an extreme drop in temperatures. Since then, we have had very mild weather, allowing us to...

Another Successful Tips for Turtles

We would like to give a big THANK YOU to Nancy Cook, Jerry Crow, Bill Betz, and PadreRitaGrill for the third Tips for Turtles! Started by Nancy Cook in 2012, this event raises money for us at Sea Turtle, Inc. to help defray some of the costs to help cold-stunned (hypothermic) sea turtles in the winter. In total, $2,400 was raised for STI! That is a big...

Help Sea Turtle Conservation with a Stamp

Here is one more way you can help sea turtles. Add these stamps to your holiday shopping list. Funds raised from these stamps go, in part, to fund the Marine Turtle Conservation Fund. Click here to purchase your stamps. "Marine Turtle Conservation Fund: For more than 100 million years, the ancestors of marine turtles swam the oceans. Yet in less than a century, exploitation and habitat destruction have devastated their numbers. Conservation projects work toward the goal of restoring large numbers of these ancient, intriguing creatures to the...

The Second Kemp’s Ridley Symposium

By Teresa Shumaker On November 18 and 19, Brownsville was the host to the second Kemp’s Ridley Symposium. The first one was held almost 30 years prior. The symposium was held again to gather leading researchers and scientists studying the Kemp’s ridley to address the issue of the species nesting decline since 2010. STI involvement Sea Turtle, Inc. was a financial sponsor, and our staff attended the event.  One of our interns from this summer, Hilary Frandsen, was invited to present her research regarding the ability (or inability) of...

Giving Tuesday

Have you heard of #GivingTuesday? It's a new tradition. Following Black Friday and Cyber Monday, where we all shop for great deals as holiday gifts, Giving Tuesday is about giving back — anyway you can. Giving Tuesday began in New York in 2012 and has since grown. We love the idea and would like to share the idea with you, too. Because, if it wasn't for giving and caring people like you, we wouldn't exist. If you feel inspired by this new tradition, please consider supporting Sea Turtle, Inc. through a donation at...

Successful release!

On Monday, Nov. 24, and Tuesday, Nov. 25 we released about 65 sea turtles that had come to our facility the previous week due to the cold front that rapidly dropped the water temperature in the Laguna Madre. When the weather warmed up, the turtles were ready to go! Here is a video of Tuesday's release. Enjoy!
