More Good News From Nest #1!

Friday’s Kemp’s ridley nest keeps bringing us good news. Not only was it the first nest in Texas for this season, and the mama had a tag, we just learned that this sea turtle is Hang Ten’s mama!!! Above is Hang Ten, one of our resident sea turtles. Kat Lillie photo. Below is his mom, a tagged Kemp's ridley sea turtle that has nested on South Padre Island for the last 6 years. Joey Bauer photo. Hang Ten is one of our resident sea turtles. He washed back ashore in 2009 as a hatchling. He had a specific birth defect, a malformed front flipper...

The first Texas Kemp's ridley nest of the year on SPI

By Teresa Shumaker/Sea Turtle, Inc. The first Kemp's ridley nest of the Texas season was discovered Friday, April 24, around 9:45 a.m. One hundred eggs were laid, and to make it even more exciting, the sea turtle mama had an I.D. tag. Thanks to the tag, we now know that she has nested on SPI before, in 2009 and again in 2011. Kemp's ridley sea turtles usually nest every other year, which means that this sea turtle has been a healthy, consistent breeder for at least three cycles. More breeding sea turtles like her are needed to bring the...

Sea turtle release in February!

by Megan Chilcutt The weather and water temperature finally warmed up enough to release 19 sea turtles back into the Gulf of Mexico on February 15th. The turtles were a combination of rehabilitated turtles from various injuries and cold stunned turtles from several fronts that came through the area in early January. The weekend was full of love with Valentine’s Day being the day before. Spend Saturday with your honey, then come on out to the beach on Sunday to spread the love vibes to the sea turtles returning back to their natural habitat...

Posted on Mar 18, 2015

Dear Friend of the Beach, Thank you for your support in helping Sea Turtle, Inc. and Respeta Tu Playa Group in their efforts to clean several miles of the county beach on January 17, 2015. The "end of the road" clean up resulted in 6 truck loads of garbage, filling the large dumpster at County Road Beach Access 5. We are excited to announce an encore clean up to be held on March 28, 2015. This cleanup is being held in order to prepare the beach for nesting season. 23% of the 2014 nests were found in the area covered by this cleanup....

Recognition Corner: Bill Hoenes

Allison's 6th generation prosthesis, made by Bill Hoenes. Bill Hoenes photos. By Teresa Shumaker Sea Turtle, Inc. has no shortage of dedicated, talented, and wonderful volunteers. When considering who to write about, it is often difficult to find just one person. But this month we would like to highlight Bill Hoenes, who has been a volunteer at STI since his wife Maralyne began volunteering as an Allison lifeguard around 2011. (Maralyne is another wonderful volunteer and we will have to tell you about her sometime, too.) Aside from the...

We dream of darker skies

Construction workers move the last of the solar lights into place on a foggy June day, 2014. Teresa Shumaker photos. By Teresa Shumaker Last July we unveiled our new solar amber lights on Turtle Drive, purchased with a $30,000 grant from Green Mountain Energy and their customers. Sea Tutle, Inc. was the first on the island to have solar street lamps and use amber color, turtle-friendly lights and we couldn't have done it without Green Mountain and their Sun Club customers! Why are these new lights so important? Reptiles cannot see amber or...
