From Nest to Ocean: a Hatchling Story

Story and photos by Teresa Shumaker Did you ever wonder how the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle hatchlings make their way from the bottom of their nest to the beach and ocean? It is quite an interesting process. When a female sea turtle lays her nest, she packs it tight in the sand so predators cannot raid it. (The packing process is lovingly called the “mama dance” by our staff because she rocks back and forth to pack in the sand. Click here to see a video of the dance.) About 45 to 55 days later, the sea turtle hatchlings begin to break out of...

Recognition Corner : Students

By Kat Lillie As we raise money for our new building, we are touched by the generous donations from sea turtle lovers all over the world, especially from students. It gives Sea Turtle, Inc. such hope to see children of all ages coming together to support sea turtles. The future of sea turtles depends on the effort everyone puts in to protect them. Children in school today will determine how the turtles do tomorrow. We have recently received many generous donations from schools all over the country. Everything from adoptions to seat plaques to...

Allison's Bricks are back!

Due to popular demand, we have brought back Allison's Walkway Bricks that can be personalized! Help pave the future of our new building! Allison, our one-flippered sea turtle, will have her very own exercise tank where she can swim while wearing her prosthesis. The path to her tank will be paved with personalized bricks. $1.3 M in Matching Funds

From now until March 2018 a generous benefactor will match all contributions to Sea Turtle, Inc.’s Capital Campaign — up to $1.3 million! This matching donation has enabled to undertake the entire project at once, instead of completing in phases. Years of contributions enabled Sea Turtle, Inc. to purchase five acres of land adjacent to our current building in 2013. The infrastructure and road leading to the new buildings has been completed. The blueprints are ready, the contracts are signed. Groundbreaking occurred in spring of 2017! The...

Hatchling Season Has Begun!

Story by Teresa Shumaker, Photos by Jim Lowenstein. The first nests of the 2015 season hatched and were released this week. Five nests in total have hatched, with more on their way soon! On Monday, June 22, about 70 turtle fans attended the first public release to cheer the babies on. Now, hundreds of young sea turtles are swimming with all their might to make it to the floating sargassum mats several miles offshore. A few nests emerged in the middle of the night, so staff released them in the pitch dark far north of South Padre Island...

First Island YappoPalooza an Initial Success!

After working hard for several months, STI staff members are pretty thrilled about how well the YappoPalooza Festival and Benefit went over Father’s Day weekend. This was the first time Sea Turtle, Inc. hosted the fifth annual event. Previously, YappoPalooza was held in San Marcos, Texas. YappoPalooza is a fundraiser for sea turtle conservation, but it is also a vehicle to share Jeffrey Boruff’s story and inspire the next generation(s) to give of themselves. Jeffrey was a key volunteer in the Bi-National Kemp’s Ridley Project in Rancho Nuevo,...
