The Economic Impact of Sea Turtle Inc.

Over 1,000 people attended a rehabilitated sea turtle release February 15, 2015. STI's sea turtle releases usually have large attendance of hundreds, but this giant crowd was a surprise to everyone, even backing up the causeway and requiring police escort to get staff and the turtles to the beach. Photo courtesy of Tommy Seanz. By Teresa Shumaker An economic study performed this summer by two STI interns, Samantha Grimes and Kara Koenig, revealed that Sea Turtle, Inc. has a substantial economic impact on its community. STI has always strived...

Laser Treatment Helps Sea Turtles

By Teresa Shumaker The staff at Sea Turtle, Inc. has reduced the healing time by half for several injured sea turtles. How? With the use of medical low-level laser therapy (LLLT), also called cold therapy, which is a non-invasive medical treatment. LLLT encourages the cells to create a lot of energy, which in turn speeds up wound recovery, reduces tissue inflammation, and reduces pain. Studies are now showing that sea turtles respond well to LLLT treatments and their recovery time is dramatically reduced. We have four juvenile Atlantic greens...

Guardian Turtles Are on Display!

Some of the uniquely designed Guardian Turtle dedications are now adorning Turtle Drive. We have renamed our Guardrail Turtles to Guardian Turtles and they will add color and beauty to our new amphitheater. They will be placed on the back wall, visible from the ground up. For a one-time sponsorship you too can create a ceramic turtle for all visitors to see! We have only  created molds for 100 turtles, so the...

From Nest to Ocean: a Hatchling Story

Story and photos by Teresa Shumaker Did you ever wonder how the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle hatchlings make their way from the bottom of their nest to the beach and ocean? It is quite an interesting process. When a female sea turtle lays her nest, she packs it tight in the sand so predators cannot raid it. (The packing process is lovingly called the “mama dance” by our staff because she rocks back and forth to pack in the sand. Click here to see a video of the dance.) About 45 to 55 days later, the sea turtle hatchlings begin to break out of...
