Rehabilitated Sea Turtle Release

Rehabilitated Sea Turtle Release

Our latest release was on Friday, Oct. 17. Four sea turtles — three juvenile Atlantic greens and Al, a sub-adult loggerhead — were released from the beach at Isla Blanca Park, near the jetties. Loggerheads will migrate up and down the coast close to shore. So the location of this release was chosen specifically for Al. The young greens are found in the Laguna Madre and on the ocean side of South Padre Island, so releasing near the jetties allows them to choose which way they wish to go. Careful consideration is given to each turtle when we...

We are sporting Pink for October!

We all know the phrase “It ain’t easy being green” but here is Allison showing off her support for breast cancer awareness by wearing pink! (Don’t worry, we didn’t dye her, this is just some color fun in photoshop.) We have some new long sleeve shirts and hoodies available in our gift shop. For every pink one purchased in October, we will donate 10 percent of the proceeds to SPI Walk for Women, a locally based nonprofit that raises awareness and gathers community support for those fighting breast cancer. Follow this link to see the hoodies:...

Big news in our plans for expansion!

On Sept. 4 Sea Turtle, Inc. was notified that it was awarded a grant by the Shelton Family Foundation for $30,000 to build an acrylic tank in our new Educational Center. The tank will be the centerpiece in the open entrance of the future facility. It will be a replication of the Flower Gardens Marine Sanctuary in the Gulf of Mexico and there will be an educational display about coral reef ecosystems. It will also house our hawksbill patients, which live among the coral habitat. Later that day, an anonymous benefactor told us they will donate...

2014 Annual Celebration a huge success!

By Megan Chilcutt and Teresa Shumaker The Sea Turtle, Inc. 2014 Annual Celebration, held on Sept. 6, was a huge success! The live auction started with a bang when STI's vet tech, Brian Thurow, offered to shave his head for pledges. Brian's hair was past his shoulders and he hadn't cut it in five years. It was a big offer and everyone responded with equally big pledges. His haircut alone raised over $13,000! In total, the event raised just under $40,000. Those funds will go to our Capital Campaign's next phase of development: the Educational...

What is a Stranded Turtle?

When sea turtles are sick or injured they stop swimming and are washed ashore by waves and tides. This is when people find them. After a stranded turtle arrives at STI, triage begins. Its condition is evaluated and they are treated by our Vet Tech and staff, or sent to Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville if needed. GPZ does major surgeries and x-rays. The four main reasons for stranding are: predation, entanglement, boat props, and plastic consumption. Other reasons are cold stuns (hypothermia), oil spills, and internal infections. If you find a...
