Sea Turtle, Inc. offers school groups the exciting opportunity to explore the world of sea turtles through an interactive tour of our facility. Tours may be scheduled from 10am to 3pm, Tuesday - Sunday. We offer presentations in both English & Spanish ~ please specify if you need a Spanish presentation. Tour times are one hour long and consist of a 20-25 minute age-appropriate presentation where our trained Educator will teach your students about sea turtle conservation, different aspects of a sea turtle’s life cycle, and the 5 species in the Gulf of Mexico. For the remainder of the hour, students will be able to view our sea turtle ICU and rehabilitation center under the supervision of Sea Turtle, Inc. staff and volunteers. They may also use this time to purchase turtle items from our gift shop.
March, April, and May are the busiest months for school groups at Sea Turtle, Inc. Be sure to make your appointment far enough in advance!
Our facility can handle a maximum of 100 students. If you have more than 100 students, we recommend splitting the group. Sea Turtle, Inc. will try to accommodate large groups by scheduling back to back tours when possible. While one group is at our facility, we recommend the other group takes advantage of the UTPA Coastal Studies Lab, SPI Birding & Nature Center, a Dolphin Watch Tour, or even a trip to the beach.

**Please note: activities with other facilities cannot be booked through Sea Turtle, Inc. **

Cost: $2 per student & $3 per adult chaperone.

On Field Trip Day....

The leader of the group must check in at the gift shop cash register to announce the group’s arrival and pay the entrance fee. Do not unload your students until check-in is complete. Sea Turtle, Inc. accepts cash, checks, and school purchase orders (PO’s).
Once the leader has checked in, buses may begin to unload. For student drop-off and pick-up, buses are permitted to pull up to the curb in front of Sea Turtle, Inc.’s main entrance. However, between these times, buses must park in the parking lot across the street (in front of the vacant building). Parking on the curb is NOT permitted except when loading and unloading students.
Please arrive to Sea Turtle, Inc. ON TIME! Remember that we have scheduled this field trip time especially for your group. School groups are often scheduled back to back and we cannot inconvenience other groups to accommodate yours. If you arrive late, Sea Turtle, Inc. may have to cut your tour short or deny your group access to the facility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the students eat lunch at Sea Turtle, Inc?
No. At the moment, Sea Turtle, Inc. has no lunch facilities.

Why aren’t students allowed to touch the turtles?

There are multiple reasons that students are not permitted to touch the sea turtles. First off, Sea turtles are protected under the Endangered Species Act. You must have a federal permit to handle any endangered species. Secondly, the sea turtles at Sea Turtle, Inc. are our patients. Imagine someone coming into a hospital and touching you! It is stressful for the animal and it can spread disease from turtle to turtle. Finally, our biggest concern is our visitor’s safety. Sea turtles have very powerful jaws and are actually capable of biting off fingers! For everyone’s safety we ask that not only you do not try to handle the turtles, but completely keep your fingers out of the water at all times.

When is the best time of year to schedule a field trip?
Sea Turtle, Inc. is open all year round but there are a few factors to keep in mind. Dec-Feb can be very cold and our facility is open-sided. If temperatures drop under 55* we cannot un-tarp the outside tanks because they are heated. March – May is the most popular season for school field trips but remember dates fill up fast so call in advance. For the month of May we suggest calling two months in advance!

What if we have bus trouble or we arrive late?
If you have to make ANY changes to your scheduled tour, call Sea Turtle, Inc. as soon as possible. We will try our best to accommodate your group by rescheduling. If your tour date is not booked, it may be possible to get you in even on the same day.
