The nesting season for the island typically runs from April - August of each year. We offer an Adopt A Nest Program. For a $100 donation we will list your name on the website, send out a data packet of your nest in late summer and notify you of the hatching of your nest. Please call (956)761-4511 if you are interested in Adopting a Kemp's ridley nest. During the 2009 season, South Padre Island & Boca Chica beaches had a total of 42 Kemp's ridley nests. We incubate the nests within a fenced off corral for protection. Of the 42 total nests found, 37 were relocated into our corral. The 5 nests that were not relocated are referred to as "in situ". This is a Latin term (meaning in place) which refers to a nest that was not relocated to our corral and subsequently hatched in the wild. This past summer we released over 2700 Kemp's ridley hatchlings into the Gulf of Mexico. We invite the public to attend the hatchling releases as often as possible. This past summer we were able to have 12 public releases of the hatchlings. If you are interested in attending a public hatchling release, please check the Sea Turtle, Inc. website from May-August. We will update this page with estimates for the hatching dates of each nest. For more information on nesting season and how to adopt a sea turtle nest, please call (956)761-4511. 2007 Hatchling Release Video - Click here 2008 Hatchling Release Video - Click here
