The Sea Turtle, Inc. 2014 Annual Celebration, held on Sept. 6, was a huge success! The live auction started with a bang when STI's vet tech, Brian Thurow, offered to shave his head for pledges. Brian's hair was past his shoulders and he hadn't cut it in five years. It was a big offer and everyone responded with equally big pledges. His haircut alone raised over $13,000!

In total, the event raised just under $40,000. Those funds will go to our Capital Campaign's next phase of development: the Educational Center. Phase 2 is expected to cost $1.2 million on total for the facility and new parking lot. So far, $800,000 has been raised and plans to break ground in early 2015 are underway.

The fundraiser

For about ten years, the community on South Padre Island has come together to help us produce this auction. The auction is usually organized by volunteers, minimizing STI's costs an ensuring almost every dime collected goes to Sea Turtle, Inc.

For this year's celebration, we would like to extend a special thank you to Barry Patel and all of the staff at the Hilton Garden Inn for donating the beautiful ballroom, the food, and beverages for the fourth year in a row!

And of course we couldn't do it without these corporate sponsors as well: Julie and Bill Best, International Idiot’s Club, Clayton’s Beach Bar and Grill, Blue Marlin Supermarket, Carol Gluntz, Padre Island Brewing Company, First Community Bank, Troy Giles Realty and Management, Lynne Tate Real Estate, KVEO Channel 23 News, and Quick Stop.

We would also like to thank our artist in residence, Tony Reisinger, who showcased his wonderful Japanese fish print art.

All of the auction items were donated by local businesses and artists.

We cannot thank them enough for their generous contributions. To see the full list of all the auction donors and a video of Brian's haircut, please visit our website.
